Real carabiners are load bearing clips primarily
used in the rock climbing and sailing
industries. They are made from aluminum or
forged steel and feature either a solid or
wire spring loaded gate. The most common
shapes for these load bearing carabiners are
referred to as D and oval. Traditionally
they were available in silver only, now a
wide variety of colors and shapes are being
produced.
By contrast, promotional
carabiners are no load bearing and not to used
for climbing. They are designed primarily to
carry keys. Although
single and
multi
function carabiner keychains are now
available which incorporate additional
functions i.e. flashlight, whistle, bottle
opener etc. Promotional carabiner clips are
typically smaller than real carabiners and
they function by clipping to most straps and
loops. They are made from aluminum with an
anodized coating which produces an extremely
durable layer on the metal protecting it
from abrasion. Promotional carabiners are
typically anodized in a color i.e. black,
blue, red, green etc, as well as silver or
clear. As you will see in the section Laser
Engraving Explained, it's the color
anodization process which makes possible the
high quality "frosty" white laser engraved
mark you see on custom laser engraved
promotional carabiner clips.
